Local Places of Interest
Where do you begin? The Charente is a very pretty departement with what King Henri IV described as “the most beautiful river in my kingdom”, the Charente, running through the middle of it. Here we have fabulous Romanesque churches from 12th century and villages and small towns built in the fine white Sireuil stone. In the west are the vineyards of the Cognac region; in the east are the pastures and wooded hills of the Charente Limousine towards Limoges. In the south the area blends into the Perigord.
It is easy just to meander on the small local roads and laze on the banks of the Charente and go no further. However we have developed a series of more structured trips, each being a fairly easy day out from here, even in a classic car!
These include:
- The Cognac and Grande Champagne trail
- La Rochelle and the Islands (Ile d’Oleron and Ile de Re)
- Royan and the Gironde Estuary (Caviar and Lampreys)
- Bordeaux, the Medoc and the Grand Crus
- St Emilion and Pomerol
- The Perigord (Dordogne) and pre-history
- Limoges and the Confolentais
We have attractive routes planned and can recommend lunch stops as well as places of interest.
