Local Markets
Any right thinking French housewife uses only fresh produce bought daily from local sources and especially from the local markets. Therefore the markets here are of excellent quality and very well used year round. It is a satisfying business to browse and buy vegetables, poultry and fruit from the local producers. Melons abound in season and only need a drop of Pineau to make a sublime dessert. Fish stalls have produce brought fresh that day from the Atlantic, especially the Ile d’Oleron and oysters and mussels from Marennes.
Some places like Angouleme and Cognac have daily covered markets and the smaller towns like Barbezieux, Chateauneuf, Segonzac etc., have street markets on specific days. We will be happy to advise about when and where they can be found.
